Kia ora St. Theresa's Whanau
Māori Language week has been celebrated each year from 1975. Māori Language Day is September 14 and commemorates the presentation of the 1972 Māori language petition to parliament.
Mahuru Māori is an initiative began in 2017 to promote the use of te reo Māori throughout the month of September. Why a week? Why not a year? Why not a decade? A century? Because New Zealand is revitalising the Māori language and a part of that is celebration of our success and promoting te reo Māori. Māori Language Week is an opportunity for concentrated celebration, promotion and encouragement. Every minute of every hour of every day is a Māori language minute – we can choose to use te reo – every time we do, even just a ‘Kia ora!’ contributes to revitalisation.
The chosen theme for 2020 is again 'Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’.
‘Kia Kaha’ is well understood in New Zealand English with its meaning of ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people – talking about language health, strength and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ we’re saying - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.
Te reo Maori is a taonga of Māori, guaranteed under the Treaty of Waitangi. The Māori Language Act 2016 also makes clear it is for every New Zealander and a valued part of our national identity.
On Wednesday, we heard of the sad passing of Deborah Norris's mum, Jenny. Jenny Norris was well known in our school and faith community. She was a teacher both at St. Theresa's and Bishop Viard College and a strong and active member of our Parish. Our prayers, thoughts and aroha go out to the Norris family at this very sad time.
Thank you all once again for supporting us through the Level 2 restrictions. We are very hopeful that next week will see us move back into Level 1 and we are looking forward to the increased freedom this brings. It will be great to finish the term and go into the holidays in Level 1.
Have a great weekend.

Gospel reading for Sunday, 20th September, 2020
Check out these amazing works of art done by some of the students in Room 9, under the tutelage of Mr. Byrne!
Prayer to bless our togetherness in a pandemic that holds us apart - Prayer 3
This is the third in a series of prayers by Fr James Lyons during a time when many people are unable to meet with those they love.
Socially Distant
Mary, with your sister and some others,
you stood on Calvary at a distance, helpless with grief as Jesus died.
There are many today in this pandemic crisis who cannot be with those they love
who lie ill, perhaps dying.
All must remain socially distant, unable to hold or even touch lest the virus spreads.
Be with those who feel so helpless.
Room 3 loves to dance. We managed to catch some sun during the week and did some Shadow Dancing. Look at our awesome moves.
As per the announcement today we remain in level 2 with the likelihood that we will move to level 1 Monday September 19th. We will resume sports leagues and play the final round of Futsal on Tuesday 22 Sep and Wednesday 23 Sep as per times on the draw.
