Mai i te Kopae ki te Urupa, tatou ako tonu ai - From the cradle to the grave, we are forever learning.
Kia ora everyone, from sunny Nelson. I have the wonderful job of accompanying our Year 5 and 6 children on their camp to Bridge Valley in Nelson this week. I have been so impressed with the children and the way they have stepped out of their comfort zones, supported each other and consistently displayed our SPARK values in everything they have done. Our parent helpers have been wonderful, supporting all the children to give things a go and helping keep things running so smoothly. A massive thank you to Pauline MacLean and Trish Fitzsimons for the huge amount of work they do before, during and after camp and of course thanks to Keely Saunders for being my team mate.
The weather has been wonderful, the food plentiful and the staff at Bridge Valley very professional. I won't give anything away but the children will be full of amazing stories when they return.
Thank you to our Parents & Friends group who are organising the Family Christmas Fun Night on Thursday, 1 December. Please fill in this very quick survey if you are coming so we can get an approximate idea for catering purposes. https://forms.gle/
Have a great weekend.
Nga mihi,
Donna McDonald - Principal

Gospel for Sunday, 27th November, 2022
First Sunday of Advent
Matthew 24: 37-44
In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples that the coming of the Son of Man will catch many people unprepared. We do not know when the day will be that the Son of Man will return but we can prepare through prayer and our faithfulness to the commandments and to Jesus' teaching. God requires us to pay close attention in order to hear the ways He is calling us. Although we don't have to decipher God's call, we do need to learn to recognize and understand it.
Sparks of God - Term 4, Week 5
A constellation of super SPARKS for the 5th week of Term 4!
We know you're out there spreading your light.
Family Christmas Fun Night - Thursday, 1st December
We are asking for donations for the Christmas Shop that will be running on the night and also Mystery Jars. All the information you need is in this newsletter.
Looking forward to seeing you and your whanau.
We have a wonderful menu planned for our Christmas Family Fun Night next Thursday, 2nd December. To achieve this, we would love some donations of the following items:
Streaky bacon and/or sauce (either tomato or BBQ)
We can accept any donations right away as we have fridge space here at school. Many, many thanks in anticipation.
St. T's Thunderbirds won 3-2 last week. Elijah Aitofi was PoD for his determination and commitment during the game.
Christmas Raffle Books - keep them coming in, please!
It's wonderful to see how much effort is being made and it will be so worth it! There are 5 amazing prizes and what's not to love about that?
Thank you to everyone who has already sold their book, returned the butts, paid the money and those who have taken more books! We would really appreciate it if you could return any sold books and money which will make admin much easier for us. The final date for all books to be returned is Monday, 5th December. Remember that you can pay for your book online (12 3254 0109325 00) if that makes it easier, using the reference RAFFLE and make sure you send in the butts!
Is your family up for the prize for the most sold books? Here's hoping!
Our school bear, Theresa, was taken on an exciting adventure by Mr. Byrne! How lucky was she?!
St Theresa’s Catholic School Learning Hub - Summer Reading Program
Summer Reading borrowing will be available this year starting, Week 8 – SIGN YOUR CHILD’S PERMISSION SLIP coming home next week and they will be allowed to borrow up to 10 BOOKS to read over the holidays.
The children will be called in scheduled class groups to make their selections. Chosen books will be issued and sent home with your child.
Books must be returned in week 1, Term 1 next year. Lost/damaged books will be charged for.
OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE HOLIDAYS.
Tips to keep those reading miles ticking over!
It’s hard to keep up a reading routine in a season packed with distractions and diversions.
Many children, especially struggling readers, forget some of what they've learned or slip out of practice during the summer months. Try these 3 steps to help your child improve their reading during the summer and beyond:
-
Six books to summer success: Research shows that reading just six books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing. When choosing the six, be sure that they are just right — not too hard and not too easy. Take advantage of your school and local library. Ask for help selecting books that match your child's age, interests, and abilities. (We allow up to 10 books per child).
2. Read something every day: Encourage your child to take advantage of every opportunity to read. Find them throughout the day:
-
Morning: The newspaper (physical or digital) — even if it is just the comics or today's weather.
-
Daytime: Schedules, TV guides, magazines, online resources, etc.
-
Evening: End the day by having your child read to you from the book they are currently reading (maybe one of their library books). Have them rehearse a paragraph, page, or chapter before reading to you. Rereading will help them be more fluent — able to read at an appropriate speed, correctly, and with nice expression.
-
Travelling: Read road signs, town names, street names, personalised number plates, billboards, shop displays, airport, bus and train schedule boards - the options are endless.
-
Equally important “Keep reading aloud”: Reading aloud benefits all children and teens, especially those who struggle. One benefit is that you can read books your child can't, so they will build listening comprehension skills. This will increase their knowledge and expand their experience with text, so that they will do better when reading on their own.
-
Consider borrowing an audiobook from the Public Library and allow your child to put on some headphones and listen online. (free with a public library membership)
