Mai i te Kopae ki te Urupa, tatou ako tonu ai - From the cradle to the grave, we are forever learning.
It has been so exciting this week, listening to the children as they prepare their speeches. The variety of topics has been amazing. It is such a wonderful skill to learn and it is awesome to see the confidence our children have when presenting to their class mates. The 5-year olds in Room 1 started us off in Assembly last week with their well-written and presented speeches and the seniors are presenting their competitive speeches in the Church today. Well done to all the children - we are very proud of them.
Thanks to Trish Fitzsimons and Keely Saunders for supporting our children at the Parumoana School Athletics day on Tuesday. The sun was shining and the children had a great time competing in a range of events.
We really appreciate your support of the teachers attending the paid union meeting today, by picking your children up early. Any children who remain at school will be supervised by staff and then those attending After School Care will be taken over to the hall.
Next week, Room 9 and 10 are off to Bridge Valley Camp in Nelson. Pauline MacLean, Trish Fitzsimons, Keely Saunders and I will be accompanying them, with a group of parent helpers. The children are all very excited to be going to the South Island on the ferry and are looking forward to everything camp offers.
Have a great weekend and go Samoa!
Nga mihi,
Donna McDonald - Principal

Gospel for Sunday, 20th November, 2022
Thirty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke 23: 35-43
This Sunday is the last in the Church’s Liturgical Year and is the Feast of Christ the King. In this Gospel, the thief recognises Jesus as a king and that Jesus will be king in Paradise. Christ the King is different from all traditional notions of royalty. Christ is King because in His death and resurrection, He brought salvation to all humankind. We show that we are his followers when we live our lives accordingly. We are invited to reflect on how we honor Christ the King in our lives.
A very warm welcome to Hugo Jackson and his parents Aron and Gemma. We wish you many, many happy years as part of our St. T's community and hope that you enjoy your time here.

A massive thanks to everyone who has already sold their book, returned the butts, paid the money and those who have taken more books! If your book is sold, please return it to the Office as this will make it easier for us when it gets closer to the return date for all tickets - Monday, 5th December. There is the option to pay for your book online (12 3254 0109325 00) if that makes it easier, using the reference RAFFLE and make sure you send in the butts!
There is a prize for the family who sells the most books so hopefully you'll be up for the challenge.
A big thanks to our resident Mr. Fix-it, Ian Capewell. We really appreciate all you have been doing around the school for us. Hopefully we don't drive you nuts with all our weird and wonderful requests!
Yesterday, 2 teams went to Brandon School for the EPro8 Challenge. Team 1 were Tristan, Abby, Poppy and Jack. Team 2 were Max, Isaac, Joshua and Willow. There were 4 challenge options: Trapped Bed, Road Marker, Magic Magnets and Vending Machine. Team 1 did the Magic Magnets and the other team did the Road Marker. At the end, there had to be only 4 teams going to the next round but there was one group in first place but 5 groups tying for second so there had to be a tie breaker. The challenge for second place was to make a button that made a light turn on and the other button make a buzzer sound. In the end, Team 2 ended up coming 2nd place and will now go on to the next round! Congratulations to all the participants and good luck to Team 2 for the final.
Our Team 2 winners (but missing Joshua)!
The Year 5/6 St T’s Saints played on Tuesday and lost 7 - 5. It was the first loss for the boys and they played so well and so hard. It was a very tough opposition. Our PoD was Chris Smith. Chris had a great attacking game and gave it 100%.
The Year 3/4 St T’s Lakers played on Wednesday and had a great 5 - 0 win. All the kids played so well and really enjoyed themselves. We had two pOds this week - Alex Buchanan and Max Grimwood. Alex was great at dribbling the ball up the court and had some great steals from the other team. Max played a great attacking game with a couple of great goals.
St. T's Stars played Papakowhai Whitu and won 1- 0.
PoD went to Kyle Sichampanakhone for a great all round game.

OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE HOLIDAYS.
Tips to keep those reading miles ticking over!
It’s hard to keep up a reading routine in a season packed with distractions and diversions.
Many children, especially struggling readers, forget some of what they've learned or slip out of practice during the summer months. Try these 3 steps to help your child improve their reading during the summer and beyond:
-
Six books to summer success: Research shows that reading just six books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing. When choosing the six, be sure that they are just right — not too hard and not too easy. Take advantage of your school and local library. Ask for help selecting books that match your child's age, interests, and abilities. (We allow up to 10 books per child).
2. Read something every day: Encourage your child to take advantage of every opportunity to read. Find them throughout the day:
-
Morning: The newspaper (physical or digital) — even if it is just the comics or today's weather.
-
Daytime: Schedules, TV guides, magazines, online resources, etc.
-
Evening: End the day by having your child read to you from the book they are currently reading (maybe one of their library books). Have them rehearse a paragraph, page, or chapter before reading to you. Rereading will help them be more fluent — able to read at an appropriate speed, correctly, and with nice expression.
-
Travelling: Read road signs, town names, street names, personalised number plates, billboards, shop displays, airport, bus and train schedule boards - the options are endless.
-
Equally important “Keep reading aloud”: Reading aloud benefits all children and teens, especially those who struggle. One benefit is that you can read books your child can't, so they will build listening comprehension skills. This will increase their knowledge and expand their experience with text, so that they will do better when reading on their own.
-
Consider borrowing an audiobook from the Public Library and allow your child to put on some headphones and listen online. (free with a public library membership)
Invitation to the Advent Communal Reconciliation Service - Sunday, 4th December 4p.m.
Advent is a time of great hope, it is a time of prayer, reconciliation and spiritual preparation to welcome the birth of Jesus and the hope of the Second Coming.
In the midst of a busy end of school year and preparing for Christmas, this is an opportunity to reflect on the year and on our actions. Advent is a wonderful time to celebrate the reconciling love and healing graces that God offers us.
We invite our children and families to participate in the Advent Communal Reconciliation Service at St Theresa’s Church on Sunday, 4th December at 4 pm.
Christmas Eve Play at the family Mass Bishop Viard College.
Can you help? After a few years Livvy McKennie has stood down as our director. We would like to thank her for her wonderful help and guidance for the past few years and as we all know, this is a wonderful way to start our Christmas family Mass. We are now looking for a new person to run this. We will provide the play and the school has a lot of costumes we can use so we just need one or two adults prepared to practise with the children. If you can help, please let Jocelyn know asap at either st.theresas@xtra.co.nz or 04-2331279.
The Plimmerton Big Spring Clean Sunday, 20th November 9.30am
