Mai i te Kopae ki te Urupa, tatou ako tonu ai - From the cradle to the grave, we are forever learning.
This week we celebrate Māori Language Week or Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Maori Language Week has been celebrated every year since 1975. Māori Language Day is September, 14th and commemorates the presentation of the 1972 Māori language petition to parliament. This year is extra special as 14th September marks the 50th anniversary of the Māori Language Petition, an event that led to many of the kaupapa we have today, including Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.
Our cultural leaders have been working hard at a play they will present to the whole school at Assembly on Friday and all classes have been participating in activities that support their understanding of te Reo Māori.
We were excited to have our flash new soccer goal post arrive last week and thanks to Ian Capewell who assembled it for us, the children are now able to use it. We were able to purchase this goal post from a grant from the Hutt Mana Charitable Trust and we are very grateful for their support. Thanks also to Jacqui Reading who contines to apply for grants and to the Parents & Friends group for their fundraising efforts that support the upgrading of our field and outside play environment.
New Zealand will observe a one-off public holiday on Monday, 26th September to mark our memorial service for the Queen. It will be called Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day. School will be closed on this day.
We were all so very proud of our children this week as they represented St Theresa's Catholic School in the ArtSplash and DanceSplash shows at the Michael Fowler Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Thank you to Jo Beasley, Trish Fitzsimons, Sheena Beales and Keely Saunders for all the work they have put into getting our children ready for these shows - they were amazing!
New long-term strategy for COVID-19
As you will be aware, the Prime Minister announced on Monday that Cabinet agreed to remove the COVID-19 Protection Framework as of Monday, 12th September at 11.59p.m. New Zealand will move to a new, long-term approach to COVID-19. These changes have been made, based on public health advice and reflect high levels of immunity and declining case numbers across New Zealand.
This new approach will only result in minor changes to the way we operate.
Household contacts of a person with COVID-19 do not need to isolate but instead are asked to complete a RAT each day, for five days. Therefore, children who are household contacts but test negative and do not have COVID-19 symptoms, should continue to attend school.
Mask wearing is no longer required.
All the other recommended public health measures will stay in place as we know they reduce the spread of infectious illnesses including COVID-19. These include ensuring our indoor spaces are well-ventilated, maintaining good hand hygiene, encouraging everyone to cough or sneeze into elbows and most importantly, staying home and getting tested if they have COVID-19 symptoms.
Thank you for your ongoing support in ensuring our community stays well, we look forward to Term 4 and a slowing down of the winter bugs.
Nga mihi,
Donna McDonald - Principal

Gospel for Sunday, 18th September, 2022
Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke 16:1-13
In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of a dishonest steward who was taking money for himself instead of looking after the one he was working for. In this parable, Jesus tells us that we cannot serve God and money. He is not telling us that money is bad but He wants us to know that true happiness does not come from money but from God. We are invited to reflect on this Gospel and think about one action we can do this week that shows we are putting God first.
St. Theresa's Parish - Liturgy Ministry Formation Afternoon
If you are interested in being part of Parish life and wanting to be part of a Ministry, you are welcome to attend a mini retreat on Sunday, 18th September 2 - 4 pm in the Church Hall.
We would love to see you there.

Wellbeing Day for Rooms 9 and 10
Persuasive Writing in Ruma wha
Room 4 have been working hard on persuasive writing this term, with a range of topics such as ‘Why should Mum and Dad buy me a pet’ and ‘Lizards should live in a zoo’. The goals for writing this term were to persuade a specific audience, use persuasive vocabulary and have an interesting sentence starter. Ruma wha have produced some spectacular work!
This week we did a fun exercise around persuading a stranded octopus on an island, what they should do. These are some of the awesome persuasive responses some of Room 4 came up with.
The Angels had their best game all season against Discovery, champagne netball of the highest standard with hardly any mistakes. It was drama to the end, finishing the original game 11-11 with Discovery scoring in the last seconds. The game went to Golden Goal to find the winner. We won the ball, Abby missed a shot (or maybe did an amazing trick pass) with the ball ending up in Willow's hands who calmly nailed the perfect final goal and the game ended with an exciting 12-11 victory to us.
In hindsight all the adrenaline and Black Fern level energy and excitement had been used up in the first game and the girls were unable to back it up for their following tournament game (which of course, was the game Mrs. Fitzsimons came to watch). We got what I guess you could call 'a good old hiding' by Hampton Hill, Tawa - the only team that has actually beaten us this season.
We're so proud of the girls, how far they've come and developed and we hope they will all play netball for their new schools next season, continuing their great progress from this year!
From Matt and Bodil, thanks for great support by all the whānau and to Isadora, Paige, Piata, Isabella, Siena, Poppy, Willow, Sophia and Abby for being awesome.
