A note from Deborah Norris, our Deputy Principal:
‘Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori’.
Happy Matariki to our St Theresa’s School community - past, present and future.
Matariki is a time of celebration and remembrance, when people come together to enjoy the company of friends and family. In traditional times, this would have coincided with the end of the harvest, so food was plentiful. Karakia was shared, praying for our hopes and dreams for the future, while remembering those loved ones who have passed away and being thankful for all we have.
We are looking forward to our school Matariki celebration this evening and welcoming our community as we come together. We will take time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present and share our dreams and hopes for the future.
Nau mai ngā hua. Welcome all things that have grown.
Nau mai ngā pai. Welcome all things that are good.
Nau mai kia nui, kia hāwere ai. May they be plentiful and abundant.
Our celebration starts at 5pm, with a welcome outside Room 8. Remember to bring cash and your own mug if you wish to purchase a sausage sizzle and hot chocolate. Dress warmly!
Congratulations to the St Theresa’s Interschool Cross Country team who represented our school last Thursday at Queen Elizabeth Park. Your commitment to training, determination with running a new course and your positivity were outstanding. You should all be proud of yourselves. A special congratulations to Matthew Bleach, Joshua Kerr and Will Croasdale for placing in the top 10 in your races. We look forward to hearing how you get on in the Regional Cross Country race that you have qualified for.
Nga Mihi.
Gospel for Sunday, 26th June, 2022
13th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke 9:51-62
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus is determined to travel back to Jerusalem. In this modern world, society and media tells us that we can have it all and that this is the key to happiness. However, the reality of ‘having it all’ is that when we make a choice to have something, there will always be another thing that we are missing out on. Life is all about making choices and then making a commitment to those choices even when the other options still look attractive. Jesus makes this point to three people who tell Him they want to follow Him but that they still want to do something else as well. Jesus’ response to this is, 'The Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. Let the dead bury their dead. You can't put your hand to the plow and look back.' Now although this sounds harsh, He is making an important point that helps us understand what it means to be a mature disciple: to make a commitment is to embrace certain choices and to let go of others. Reflecting on this teaching, we see that choosing a relationship with Jesus involves some sacrifices but also gives us the best thing we could possibly ask for: life with God.
We warmly welcome Natalia and Alyssa Latham and their parents, Teresa Coward and Marc Latham. Many good wishes for happy and memorable times as part of our St. T's school community.

We have had a few reports of near misses with children crossing the road (James Street) at pick up times. Please ensure that your child is properly supervised if they are crossing to meet you on the opposite side of the road, especially when there are so many parked cars at the end of the school day. These situations are very traumatising for everyone involved.
St. Theresa's Parish news and requests
As we are now able to introduce some of the Ministries again at the Mass, we desperately need people and families to volunteer to be part of them.
- Children’s Liturgy on a Sunday morning. This is done during the 9:30am Mass – resources and training provided.
- Morning tea on a Sunday morning after the 9:30am Mass.
- Offertory at both he 6pm Mass and the 9:30am Mass.
If you can help please contact Jocelyn in the office at st.theresas@xtra.co.nz.
We learnt that if we go and do little things with our hands that make other people happy, God can turn it into a really big thing! (Like how the boy who gave Jesus his small lunch ended up being enough food to make 5000 hungry people happy!)
We are looking at refurbishing the upstairs area of the Parish office back into a residence and we need to modernise it. Is there anyone in the school community who can do the drawings for us (paid, of course) for a deck off the back of the building with stairs going off this to the ground. We also want to take down a wall between the kitchen and the dining room. These drawings need to be able to be used to submit to council for resource permission. Please contact Jocelyn at the office 042331279 as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.
On Monday we went to Te Papa on the bus. We had a lesson about Matariki with Leroy. We learnt about the 7 stars of Matariki. During Matariki, we remember family members who have passed, we are thankful for everything we have in our lives and we talk about dreams and hopes for the future.
We also had time to explore the museum. We liked the whale heart, the marae, the Pataka kai, a holographic image of the ship coming to NZ and the nature area. We learnt which birds are extinct, in danger or doing OK.
We are going to miss Frankie this year, while he has adventures in the UK and Christchurch.

Matariki is usually marked by the rise of the Matariki star cluster, the constellation commonly known as the Pleiades and the sighting of the next new moon. Pleiades is mentioned on three occasions in the Bible: Job 9:9, Job 38:31 and in the book of Amos where the text reads:
He who made the Pleiades and Orion
And changes deep darkness into morning,
Who also darkens day into night,
Who calls for the waters of the sea
And pours them out on the surface of the earth,
The LORD is His name.
