Welcoming With the Korowai
New children being welcomed into the school community take part in a special ceeremony after the powhiri and during the Mass.
As their names are called out, the new child comes forward where they receive around their shoulders, a korowai (cloak). Each korowai has been made by a student of the school. The laying on of the korowai symbolises the welcome being extended to the new child, as if the child is being enveloped into and protected by the school community. Later, their name is printed into the lining of the korowai so that their presence in the school will always be remembered.
