My name is Michael Stewart and I direct the music at Wellington Cathedral of St Paul, opposite Parliament on Molesworth Street.
I am writing to you to let you know about the opportunity for children to gain a free music education and singing tuition at the Cathedral, an acknowledged centre of musical excellence.
We offer two choirs at the Cathedral: the first, the Children's Choir, is for children aged 5-8. In the Children's Choir members are taught basic musicianship and singing technique in a weekly rehearsal, and join with the Cathedral Choristers for a monthly Thursday evening service.
The Cathedral Choristers are a robed choir of 8-15 year old children, whose skills are developed in singing technique, music theory, public speaking and teamwork through two weekly rehearsals. They lead the weekly Thursday evening Evensong service, with choristers reciting the readings as well as leading all the sung components. The training that the Choristers receive has equipped many graduates to proceed on to national choirs, such as the New Zealand Secondary Schools Choir, and many of the world's leading singers can attribute their start in their profession to having been trained as chorister.
Please see the this video which illustrates a week in the life of a Cathedral Chorister presented by Archie Taylor, one of our graduates who has proceeded on to the NZSSC.
We currently have vacancies in both of these choirs. If you are interested in finding out more, please do not hesitate to contact me on 021 477 257 or at email@example.com
he 19th annual Photo Competition run by the Guardians of Pāuatahanui Inlet (GOPI) is now under way.
To encourage young photographers to enter the competition, a free photography workshop is being offered on Sunday 10th March. The workshop is open to anyone under the age of 18. It will be taught by Destina Munro, photojournalism tutor at Massey University and Whitireia.
The workshop begins with an illustrated indoor session, followed by a visit to the Pāuatahanui Wildlife Reserve, finishing with a one on one look at the photos taken in the reserve. All the participants need to bring is a camera they are familiar with, a bottle of water and appropriate clothes (it can be muddy in the reserve).
We will gather at Pāuatahanui Wildlife Reserve cottage at 4.30pm. The workshop lasts about three hours.
Registration is essential. You will find the registration form on the website www.gopi.org.nz . Should you need to contact a member of the GOPI committee, phone 04 233 9391or 027 3440068, or email firstname.lastname@example.org
For practical reasons, participation numbers will to be limited to 20.
Does your son love music or love to sing? If he does, then the Boys’ Choir based at the Metropolitan Cathedral is a fantastic opportunity for him to extend his musical knowledge and grow within a supportive fun environment. The choir is made up of boys from around the Wellington region aged from 7-12 and no previous experience of singing in choir or musical training is necessary.
Unlike other choirs in Wellington there are no weekly costs to parents for the choir and vocal and theory tutoring they receive.Over their time in the choir, boys will learn sound vocal technique, music theory, life-skills, teamwork, as well as grow in confidence and discipline. Teachers and parents see the boys’ language skills, reading comprehension skills, maths skills and confidence improve greatly by being a part of the choir.
So, if that sounds like your son, or someone you know, then encourage them to audition and contact Michael Fletcher, Director of Music, Metropolitan Cathedral or email email@example.com or phone 04 496 1780.
